Buying a Fishing Rod

North American Fisherman Magazine
Deciding on what type of fishing rod to purchase can be a difficult decision, especially if you are a casual fisherman who is looking to take fishing a little more seriously. If you are an angler thinking about moving to a higher level, here are some tips you can use for choosing a great fishing rod for yourself.

The first thing you should do is determine what type of fish you are going to be catching. Are you going to be fishing in small ponds catching smaller fish without the need for long casts? Or are you going to be fishing in larger open bodies of water where larger fish live and accuracy when casting is important?

Fishing rods tend to be categorized depending on what their purpose is and their action when used. For example, fast action fishing rods bend more at the tip of the rod and are good for general use. Fast action fishing rods are great for single hooks because they set better under faster jerks. Slower action fishing rods bend more and further down toward the base. These types of fishing rods are better used with triple hook and when fishing for larger fish. The slower action of these fishing rods allows the hook to be set firmer.

Fishing rods are also categorized by their power and how much weight they are able of carrying and reeling in. They are rated generically with terms such as heavy, medium, light, etc. The weight of the fish you are after and also the weight of the line you are using are all things that need to be considered. If you are using a very light line with a heavy fishing rod, then your line will break very easily. Your fishing environment also needs to be considered. A pond with lots of undergrowth and plants will require a heavier rod that will allow you to break free of that in the event you get snagged. Waters that are open and clear however allow for lighter fishing rods and lines to be used that also allow the angler a little more finesse when casting and reeling.

The material used for the fishing rod is also something that should be considered. Graphite rods are very common today. The quality of these types of rods vary and are generally categorized in terms such as IM6, IM7, etc. There is no standard for these classifications, but it usually means that IM7 fishing rods are better than IM6 rods. Fiberglass fishing rods are also fairly common and are used for slower action fishing situations.

There are a wide variety of fishing rods on the market today and each one is better suited for a specific type of fishing environment. This generally means that there is no one type of fishing rod for every environment. Hopefully this information will serve you well in determining what type of rod will best fit the type of fish you are looking to catch and the environment you will be fishing in.
